Is the Humane Society of Broward County a branch of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) or the American Humane Association (AHA)?
No, the Humane Society of Broward County is a private, non-profit, 501 (c) (3) organization. Each Humane Society is independent and not affiliated with each other. It is very confusing because so many share similar names. The HSUS and AHA are national organizations that work to protect all animals. They do not operate any shelters that adopt out dogs or cats.

Are the Humane Society of Broward County and Broward County Animal Care and Regulation (BCACR) the same organization?
No, the Humane Society of Broward County accepts pets that are surrendered by their owners and relies on donations and fees from adoptions and fundraising events to operate. The BCACR is a county organization that is supported by tax dollars. They are responsible for picking up stray pets and ensuring pets are licensed.

How many locations does the Humane Society have?
We have only one shelter located at 2070 Griffin Road, just west of I-95 in Fort Lauderdale.

Is the Humane Society of Broward County a "no-kill" shelter?
The Humane Society of Broward County is an open admission shelter. This means we accept all owned animals regardless of their condition. Animals must be friendly and healthy to go up for adoption. Those not meeting this criteria are euthanized. Many "no-kill" shelters will only take in pets they know they can find homes for or turn people away when they are full. So where is the pet to go then?

Do I have to make an appointment to drop off my pet?
Yes, we ask that anyone wanting to surrender an owned pet call our Animal Admissions department at 954.266.6873 to schedule an appointment. The shelter is open seven days.

Is there a time limit for animals?
Once an animal is evaluated and goes up for adoption, there is not a time limit, as long as the pet stays friendly and healthy.

I cannot keep my pet, will you pick it up?
The Humane Society of Broward County does not have a pickup service.

Where does the Humane Society of Broward County get the money to operate?
The Humane Society of Broward County relies on the generosity of our community and companies to fund our operations and programs budget. We do not get funding from the government, United Way or any other national or local organizations with similar names. Income sources are: adoption fees; services such as dog obedience; vaccination clinics; spay/neuter programs; pet boutique sales; fundraising events; grants; general donations and from those people who leave the shelter in their will.

How many dogs and cats does the shelter receive each week?
Depending on the time of year the shelter can receive more than 100 animals a week.

Does the shelter offer veterinarian services so the public can bring their pets there?
At the current time, the Humane Society of Broward County offers affordable spay/neuter services and offers microchipping, heartworm testing and vaccinations Monday – Friday, no appointment necessary. Email vaccines@hsbroward.com or call 954-266-6858 or click here.

Yes the HSBC offers affordable spay/neuter services and appointments are required. Email spayneuter@hsbroward.com or call 954-463-7729.

My pet is old and I can't afford to take it to the vet to have it put to sleep (euthanized). Can I bring my pet to the shelter?
Yes, the Humane Society of Broward County does provide this service. The fee is $60.00. If you would like the pet's remains returned, there is a set fee for the cremation process and this is based on the size of the pet. We are open seven days a week for your convenience and receiving opens at 8:00 AM every day. Please go to Animal Admissions at the far west side of the building and the associate there will be able to assist you.

I'm going on vacation can I board my pet at the Humane Society of Broward County?
Although the shelter is very large, we do not offer pet boarding.

How many pets does the Humane Society of Broward County adopt out?
Every year more and more pets find homes, and as a result of our efforts, we placed 6,791 dogs, cats and other furry friends in 2017.
